SIDEBARS I CLICKED on a book’s thumbnail in my Library Thing listing (right column). The book turned out to be a collection of poems by Sappho. Some blame medieval monks for the fact that we have only fragments of these heartbreakingly beautiful poems. Me, I don’t know. But I do know that somebody destroyed them — and rather thoroughly, too.
Which “merely” adds one more crime at the feet of barbarians destroying works of art they are incapable of apprehending. You know the list.
I pray there is a special circle in Hell for those who wantonly destroy the creations of the minds of others.
